Blog #39 "Run"

Is David right, is Tally amazing? Do you think she should be feeling guilty? Why or why not?
I think David is right, Tally is still a good person she didn't mean to betray them. I don't think she should be feeling guilty, she tried to destroy the pendant.

Blog Post #38 "Run"

Who is the voice in the dark? Do you think it will be a friend or enemy to Tally? What do you think Tally will do?
I think it is David's parents, which is obviously a friend. I think she will depend on them to save her.

Blog #37 "In Case of Damage"

Explain what self presercation means to you. Is it the most impotant thing? Would you lie because of it?
It means protecting yourself above all else. It isn't the most important thing to me, because there are somethings more important. I think it depends on what I am lying about, but for the most part no.

Blog #36 "The Rabbit Pen"

Tally had changed her mind about the Smoke and the operation, but what will she do about all that now? Whose side is she on?
I think she will resist, she knows about the brain lesions. She will stand with the Smokies I think.

Blog #35 "Invasion"

Is this the climax of the book? Explain in a few sentences.
Yes, I think so because this is the biggest event that has happened so far. It usually gets sad from this point. Most of the conflicts get solved at this point.

Blog #34 "Burning Bridges"

Read the following quote David says to Tally. "What you do, the way you think, makes you beautiful." Name one person in your personal (home) life and one in your academic life what makes this person beautiful.
Morgan Muston is beautiful to me because she is a good person on the outside and she doesn't go along with the crowd.
Mrs. Valdez is beautiful because she is a good teacher, she isn't lame, and she is a cute preagnant lady.

Respond to the following quote, what does it mean to you/to the story? "Becoming pretty doesn't just change the way you look . . . it changes the way you think."
It isn't that being pretty changes everything it is that they mess with your mind.

Blog #32 "The Secret"

What does the following quote tell you about the city and society in general? "But you do know about genetics don't you? Sure I know alll about genes. I knew tow sisters, uglies, who looked almost the same. But parents and children? That's just wierd."
I think this tells you that they are clueless. They don't even know what their parents look like before they are turned pretty.
Predict what you think being "pretty" is.
I think it is just useless and dumb. It will become a problem.

Blog #31 "Bravery"

Find an example of imagery, personifictaion, and simile. Quote directly and give page numbers.
Pg. 245 "They walked through the Smoke, past cook fires being extinguished with shovelfuls of dirt; windows coming alight with candles and electric bulbs; and a handful of young uglies pursuing an escaped chicken."
Pg. 245 "In the valley below, the orchids glowed with pale malevolence in the moonlight, a frozen sea agianst the dark shore of the forest."
Pg. 244 "Eating alone had reminded her of the days after her birthday, trapped as an ugly when everyone knew she should be pretty."

Blog #11 "The Rusty Ruins" pg 61

Write a one paragraph summary of the chapter. Tell the important events in chronological order.
Shay takes Tally to the Rusty Ruins at night. They aren't supposed to be there so they ride silently. Then Shay tells Tally she wants to show her something. Shay takes Tally on a roller coaster ride on her hover board. Shay doesn't tell Tally about the missing peice and Tally freaks out. Then Shay starts to tell Tally a little bit about David.
Find two similes in this chapter and quote them, as well as the page number.
Pg. 61 "The two friends slid between the ruined biuldings, riding high and silent as if not ot disturb the ghosts of the dead city."
Pg. 62 "Every building sported jagged spurs of metal sticking from its broken walls, like bones jutting from a long-dead animal."

Blog # 10 "Rapids" pg 53

In this chapter Tally says, "I kind of like being fooled about somethings." Do you agree with Tally, or would you rather know the reality behind everything? Why?
I agree, because I think I wold like to know but then once I know I wish I didn't.

Find information about the origin of white water rafting.

Blog # 9 "Pretty Boring" pg 46

Describe the Rusty Ruins. What are they? What happened during this time period?
The Rusty Ruins are the remains of an old Rusty city. They are burnt and abandoned. During this time period the Rusties were cruel and used their resources wastefully.

Define peer pressure. Think of a time when it happened to you or someone you know and explain the situation in a paragraph.
My friend was trying to get my other friend to not do her homework and then just copy off someone else. My friend was about to do it, but then decided not to. She almost gave in to the peer pressure, but resisted.

Blog #8 "Facing the Future" pg 39

Reflect on the following quotes from the chapter, what does each one mean to you?

"Making ourselves feel ugly is not fun." "This whole game is just designed to make us hate ourselves."

"Everyone judged everyone based on their appearance. People who were taller got better jobs . . . people killed one another over stuff like having different skin color."

"It's the only way to make people equal."
Each of these quotes tells how some people like the operation and how some don't.

Blog #7 "Wipeout" pg33

Think of another, book, movie,or comic in which people use hoverboards. How are they used? If possible post a video of this.

The movie I picked is Fantastic Four 2 :Rise of the Silver Surfer. In this movie the Silver Surfer uses his hoverboard as transportation.

Why do you think the new pretties don't come back to Uglyville to visit? Describe their physical and mental transformation into new pretties.
I don't think they come back because they have more fun in New Pretty Town. Physically they are much different, they're pretty. Mentally I think they are the same.

Blog #6 "Shay" pg 23

Write a one paragraph summary of this chapter.
Tally pulls a trick and lands in the pleasure garden. She tries to go home, but since she pulled the fire alarm there are hover cars everywhere. As she approachs the bridge she sees someone standing there, and thinks it is a warden. It is just another ugly named Shay. Tally tells Shay about the trick she pulled. Then Tally and Shay go back to Uglyville.

What have you learned about Shay? Is she like Tally? Make a prediction about what will happen between Tally and Shay.

Shay is an Ugly who likes to pull tricks like Tally. I don't think she is like Tally. I think that Tally and Shay will be friends, but never as close as Tally and Peris were.

Blog #5 "Best Friends Forever" pg 11

Why do you think New Pretty Town advocates bungee jumping?

I think it is because they want them to be safe in case of an emergency.

Find information about the history of bungee jumping.

Blog #4 "Best Friends Forever" pg 11

Characterization: Tally:
  • 15
  • ugly
  • best friends with Peris
  • all alone

Characterizaton: Peris:

  • 16
  • pretty
  • best friends with Tally
  • lots of friends

How do you feel about the friendship of Tally and Peris? Are they true best friends? Why or why not?

I think they were best friends once and they will be again once Tally is pretty. But as long as Tally is ugly they won't be very good friends. No, I don't think they are true best friends, because if they were it wouldn't matter if Tally was ugly.

Blog #3 "New Pretty Town" pg3

Find and quote one oxymoron from the chapter or one example of irony.

"Tally pushed her way through the drunken dancers, out the other side of the procession, and ran down a side street toward Garbo Mansion, wearing the face of a pig."

Why do you think Tally chose to wear a mask to the party deemed "white tie"?

I think she did this because if she didn't everyone would know that she was an ugly.

Find information about the history of masks andpost it. How does this relate to Tally's decision?

This relates to Tally's decision because the whole point of her wearing the mask was to hide her face.

Blog #2 "New Pretty Town" pg 3

Have you ever had a friend like Peris who abandoned your friendship after moving?

Yes, before I moved my best friend Kourtlyn and I said we were going to call each other everday. That is alot harder than it sounds, cause we haven't talked in like 3 months. It isn't that we meant for our friendship to end it's just that it is hard having a long distance friendship.
Describe the following terms.
  1. Interface ring- tracking device
  2. Toothbrush Pill- pill that you take that automatically brushes your teeth for you.
  3. Cacophony- alot of sounds put together

Blog #1 Before Reading

How do you define beauty? What would the world be like if everyone was "beautiful"?

I define beauty as something that you want to look at. If everyone in the world was beautiful noone is really beautiful just average.

Post a picture of something you find beautiful, and something you find ugly and explain the reasoning behind these choices in a paragraph.

http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=pretty+flower&form=QBIR&qs=n&sc=3-13#

http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=ugly+flower&form=QBIR&qs=n&sc=1-11#

I think the first one is pretty because it has pretty colors. It has a nice shape, and you just want to look at it. The second one is ugly because it has dark depressing colors. It's shape is wierd. Also the background is not to cute.

Blog #30 "Suspicion"

Do you think Shay has a right to be jealous of Tally? Why or why not?

I think she does, because she knew David and had feelings for him before Tally even knew he existed.

Tally recieved a gift from David in the chapter that is special. Have you ever received something that made others jealous as this gift did? Did your gift have a special meaning behind it as Tally's had?

Yes, my aunt takes me shopping every year and it really makes my brother jealous. It is sort of a tradition between the two of us.

Blog #29 "Hearththrob"

Why would it have been easier for Tally to activate the pendant when she got to the smoke? Explain.

It would have been easier because she didn't know anyone execept for Shay. Therefore she didn't have as many people to betray. But the longer she stays then she meets people like David who are important to her.

Blog #28 "David"

If David's parents were doctors, why do you think they ran away? Support your answer with textual evidence.

I think they ran away because they found out something they weren't supposed to know.

"My parents were runaways, not me."

Blog #27 "Work"

Find an image of a skyline like the one Tally sees. What is beautiful about it? Is there anything ugly about it?

Blog #26 "Model" pg 195

What do you think of Shay's description of a model?

I think it is true, them starving themselves to look pretty is ridiculous.

Shay and Tally have a skewed view of our time, but what have they got right?

Shay and Tally are right about us not taking care of the Earth. We are tearing down trees and polluting the air. We get into fights about what color our skin is. We are proud of ourselves because of the progress we've made, but when there are people starving and Haiti and we sit by and watch what progress have we really made. We may all be different which is a good thing, but we still need to come together and take of ourselves and the Earth.

Blog #25 "Lies" pg 187

Find a picture to represent what youu think the Smoke looks like with an explanation of why you chose it.

Blog #24 "Bug Eyes" pg178

List the important events of the chapter in chronological order.

  • Tally is pulled from the river and put into the helicopter.

  • They talk about the white flowers and give her oh-two.

  • They drop Tally off on the "bald head" from Shay's letter.

  • Tally sits and waits for the Smokies to come get her.

Respond to the following quote: ". . . Tally was stuck out here in the wild forever. Ugly for life. Her only way home was to betray her friend."

The only way for Tally to get home is for her to betray Shay. She doesn't want to but wants to be pretty.

Blog #23 "Firestorm" pg 172

Give one example of each of these from the chapter: imagery, personification, and a simile.

"Then a tearing noise filled the air, the crackle of dry brush inflamed, and the smell of smoke swept over Tally, bringing her suddenly and completely awake."

"The fire was growing stronger. Fingers of it shot up the hill, leaping from one beautiful flower to another, leaving them scorched and black."

"Her footsteps ignited with flame as she ran through the blackened flowers, like stabbing a poker into a slumbering fire."

Blog #21 "The Worst Mistake" pg 156

Have you ever made yourself do something you didn't want to because you knew you had to?

Predict what you think will happen next.

I think Tally will figure out Shay's clue and reach the smoke.
